A message from Mrs Franklin, Deputy Director of Whittle House

2009 - 2010

The Whittle Welly being ceremoniously returned by W7.

Daniel Neighbour of W9 and Miss Fraser with the Whittle Welly.

We like to make our Whittle Welly challenges topical, so last Autumn we had a pumpkin carving challenge and in the Spring we had a hyacinth growing challenge. Now that Summer has arrived, the Whittle Committee decided that it would be appropriate to hold a rounders tournament between all the Whittle tutor groups - the winner of which becoming the new holder of the much coveted Whittle Welly.

Our Deputy Sports Captain, Loubie Taylor 8W5, helped put together the order of play and set up and umpired

every match with the help of Ben Franklin 9W9, who stepped in to help Loubie when Amy Thomson, Whittle Sports Captain, wasn’t available.

The first round was held on Monday 17 June, and by close of play on the following Tuesday, we knew that W5 would be playing against W9 in the final. W9 were the favourites to win as they had scored an amazing 13 rounders in their match against W10. It was no surprise therefore that they became the rounders champions and thus the new holders of the Whittle Welly. It was, however, a very close final on the day and both teams played very well and were keen to win.

We were blessed with good weather throughout the tournament and both players and spectators enjoyed the team event and the sunshine!

Thank you Loubie and Ben for making this fun challenge possible.
