General Information about this qualification

English is spoken by only 25% of the global population, making language skills more valuable than ever. Many colleges and universities now require a language GCSE for admission. Learning a language can be challenging, but it’s also an opportunity to demonstrate your skills to future employers or schools. In today’s globalized world, knowing another language enhances your employability and earning potential. At Swanmore, you can study French or Spanish to GCSE, both of which are valuable for business, social interactions, and travel. Taking a language at Key Stage 4 is a wise choice for your future – it’s a skill for life.

What will I need to succeed?

You will need:

  • An enquiring mind and strong communication and language learning skills.

  •  A broad understanding of your chosen language in various contexts.

  • Awareness of the culture and identity of countries where the language is spoken.

  • The ability to communicate fluently and spontaneously in speaking and writing.

  • Key skills in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and intonation for further study.

  • Independence and willingness to reinforce your learning outside the classroom

     

What subject content should I be aware of?

The qualification consists of:

  • Three externally-examined papers: listening, reading, and writing.
  • One speaking assessment set by Pearson and conducted by a teacher.

Each paper is available at Foundation or Higher tier, and students must take all papers at the same tier.

What career opportunities are there after I take this qualification?

Studying a language at a higher level naturally complements a wide range of subjects, allowing you to apply your skills in a variety of careers and opportunities both locally and internationally. A-Level courses in French and Spanish are available at many local colleges, including Peter Symonds and Barton Peverill. Beyond college, a Language GCSE provides a solid foundation for further studies at degree level. Additionally, language qualifications are highly valued by employers across diverse fields, including Education, Hospitality, Politics, Law, and Business.
