Some facts for you:

  • ‘Swanmore Caterers’ is an in-house provision – the team are all permanent members of staff.
  • There are 9 members of the team led by our Catering Manager, Janet Meir.
  • There are 3 servings a day, every day: Breakfast, Snack Break & Lunch.
  • On average, the team sell 598 portions of food a day – that’s an average of 2990 portions a week.
  • The biggest sellers are chicken burgers, cheeseburgers and sausage rolls.
  • The most common item left unsold each day is a baked potato (unlike its cousin the chip on a Friday!)
  • ‘Swanmore Caterers has consistently secured a 5-star rating for hygiene annually.

The Menu

Janet and her team use the guidance from Hampshire County Council to ensure that the menus they produce are compliant with the healthy eating regulations. The menus run on a 3 weekly cycle ensuring a rotation of hot meal favourites. All food is prepared and cooked on site – fresh meat is purchased for roasts and curries, and all vegetables and fruit are freshly sourced. Janet and the team will share the 2024-2025 menus when they are finalised.

Pupil Voice

The Pupil Council meet with Janet 2-3 times a year to share menu ideas and sample new recipes. If an idea can be introduced, it will be, and the pupils understand that suggestions must sell to become a permanent fixture on the menu.

Q) The Biggest Challenge

A) Daily food waste.

There is vast range of healthy meal and snack options available every day, at every outlet, at every serving. However, fruit and salad items lead to the highest percentage of food waste in a week. There is a vegetarian hot meal option available every day and this only sells between 2-10 portions a day. There are also vegetarian snack options available. We will not reduce these options, but we would like to be able to sell more of these foods.

How can you help?

There is an enormous variety of healthy food available daily, but not all pupils are willing or able to make healthy choices. If you are concerned that your child is not eating healthily from the options available, perhaps you could talk to them about your expectations and ideas about healthy eating. Whenever we look through the menus with the Pupil Council, there is often surprise about the range of food that is available. Our aim is always to provide choice and encourage pupils to enjoy a range of food in moderation and with your help we can achieve this.
