Amber Weather Warning – Online/Live Lessons for 18/2/2022

Dear Parent/ Carer

For Health and Safety reasons, following the Amber Weather warning that has been issued by the Met Office today, I have made the decision to provide pupils with online/live lessons tomorrow.

According to the Met Office website, an Amber weather warning means that we might expect the following:

  • There is a good chance that flying debris could result in a danger to life
  • Damage to buildings and homes is likely, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down
  • Roads, bridges and railway lines are likely to close, with delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry service and flights

Currently, we have scaffolding at the entrance of two of our main buildings and one surrounding a smaller block.  Our most recent risk assessment of these areas suggests that anyone walking into these buildings could be at risk from debris above.

In addition to this, many of our pupils and staff come from significant distances away, drive along narrow, tree lined roads and some travel on double decker buses.  In my view, this is not safe when the Winchester area is suggesting 90 mph winds in the morning.

As most of our pupils and staff have experienced delivering and receiving online lessons from home over the last couple of years, clearly the safest option is to do this on our final day before the half term break.

Whilst I am sure there will be a division of opinion, I hope you will understand that your child’s and my staff’s safety has to be my primary concern.

I would urge you all to ensure that your children access their normal timetable tomorrow in order to maximise their learning. Wherever possible, live lessons will be provided. Where this is not possible, work will be put on Google Classroom. The Live Lessons Guide is attached.

I wish everyone a pleasant half-term break.

Kind regards

R K Jonathan
